CrimeRate Insights Reports are an informative snapshot of the local crime situation surrounding an address or postcode, aiming to answer the what, where, and why of each location's crime figures. With detailed written explanations, and maps next to easily-digested data, these are an indispensable tool for quickly getting up to speed with a new location..

Each report's crime data covers the 10-year time period up to the most recent crime data release. This includes the most up-to-date CrimeRate statistics at the most detailed level. We segment analysis into useful areas that can be easily compared between locations by calculating analysis areas by population size, all much more useful than trying to compare statistics taken at fixed distances..

The CrimeRate Index shows how crime levels compare to the national average:

1.0 equals the average 2.0 is double 3.0 triple 0.5 is half and 0.25 a quarter.

Complete Location Coverage

Three surrounding areas are included in the report, with analysis and data points calculated separately across them. The smart location areas are calculated automatically as the area within a 5-minute, 10-minute, and 15-minute walk of the location. All are calculated from the report's location, giving you complete coverage of the local area's crime landscape.

Crime Risk Analysis

Not all crime types are created equally. And when you see an overall crime rate figure, what does that tell you? If it's including reports of bicycle theft in amongst reports of more severe crimes, the answer is: not much. This is where our Crime Risk Scores step in. Using a custom data analysis pipeline that weights crime counts according to their relative severity (using offence sentencing guidelines to measure severity), Crime Risk Scores are a relevant measurement of crime severity in an area, and one that can be directly compared with other locactions without caveats.

Prevent Nasty Surprises

Most high crime rates have a perfectly rational explanation behind them. Theft from the person - more commonly known as pickpocketing - for example, will be at higher than usual levels if your location's near to a large-ish transport hub, just because that's where pickpockets operate. But now, armed with this knowledge, you can take steps to make the job slightly harder for the ne'er-do-wells. Knowledge is power!

Crime Trend Analysis

Hmmm, wonder what happened during March 2020 to cause that massive dip? 🤔 Each report includes detailed and statistically-validated trend analysis for both Crime Risk Scores, and the top movements - both up and down - for various crime types around each location. This is based on applying Seasonal-Trend decomposition using LOESS (STL) at rather a large scale. We're excited to combine this with spatio-temporal analysis using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, currently in development.
